Embracing Our Good Shepherd: Finding Rest and Assurance in God’s Care

As pastors’ wives and women in ministry, we often pour out more than we realize, giving our time, love, and energy to those around us. In the midst of caring for others, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed, exhausted, or even fearful about our journey. Thankfully, God invites us to rest in His care, offering Himself as our shepherd who provides for our every need.

In Psalm 23:1, we’re reminded, “The Lord is my shepherd; I have all that I need.” These words, often recited in times of trouble, speak directly to the deep relationship God desires to have with us. He isn’t just a distant overseer but our Shepherd, one who knows us personally, watches over us, and ensures that we lack nothing necessary for our journey. This isn’t a call to a life free from challenges but a reassurance that God provides all we need to navigate them.

Jesus expands on this image in John 10:14, saying, “I am the good shepherd; I know my own sheep, and they know me.” In this passage, Jesus emphasizes the mutual relationship of trust and intimacy. This isn’t merely a one-way relationship where we receive passively; instead, it’s an invitation to engage actively with Him, to know Him as He knows us. Just as we find comfort in His guidance, He delights in our trust and reliance on His care.

As we walk through our ministry calling, we may face situations where the weight of others’ expectations or our own self-doubt looms heavy. Psalm 23:1 and John 10:14 remind us to lean fully into the good Shepherd’s presence. In those moments, we are not just women in ministry trying to “do it all”; we are His beloved sheep, each known personally by name, each guided step-by-step along a path designed for us.

Let this understanding of God as our Shepherd bring you peace today. When we remember that Jesus, our good shepherd, willingly laid down His life for us, it becomes easier to surrender our fears and embrace the rest He offers. Take heart, dear sister—you are deeply loved, intimately known, and continuously cared for by the Shepherd who ensures you lack nothing.

Reflection:

  1. In what areas of ministry or personal life do you feel God calling you to rest and trust in Him as your Shepherd?
  2. How can you embrace His care and protection as you care for others?

Let these truths ground you in peace as you serve: you are not alone. You are guided, known, and abundantly cared for by the One who leads you beside still waters and restores your soul.
